HOW to be.....Peanut Free

How to be . . .Peanut Free

Always Check labels – as processes and ingredients can change at anytime

Be aware of knock-offs. Companies often come out with products that look almost exactly like other brands. For example there are at least a dozen lollipops on the market that look like dum dums.

Allergen labeling law consists of two parts:
I. The labeling of allergens that are part of the recipe:
1) Always declare the presence of any top allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, soy, wheat, fish and crustacean shellfish) whenever they are part of the recipe, regardless of the source (e.g., flavors, spices, colors, other minor ingredients, etc.)

2) Label these allergens in commonly understood terms at least once within the ingredient listing (e.g., casein (milk), etc.)

NOT Covered by law & voluntary
The use of "May Contain " labeling:
Policy that if the protein from any one of the top eight allergens* were to be unintentionally transferred from one product/ingredient to another, indicate this in a statement just below the ingredient declaration ("Allergy Information: May Contain "). As a result, some companies use the "May Contain " statement when: They have used all reasonable means to eliminate the allergen cross contact; and have documented proof that, despite our best cleaning efforts, allergen cross contact exist

Symptoms

By Mayo Clinic staff
An allergic response to peanuts usually occurs within minutes after exposure, and signs and symptoms range from mild stomach or skin reactions to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that can constrict the airways and block breathing.
Common symptoms
Signs and symptoms of peanut allergy can include:
  • Skin reactions such as hives, redness or swelling
  • Itching or tingling in or around the mouth and throat
  • Digestive problems such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting
  • Tightening of the chest
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
Anaphylaxis
Peanut allergy is the most common cause of anaphylaxis, a medical emergency that requires treatment with an epinephrine (adrenaline) injector (EpiPen, Twinject) and a trip to the emergency room. Signs and symptoms start soon after consuming peanuts and can include:
  • Constriction of airways, including a swollen throat that makes it difficult to breathe
  • Shock, with a severe drop in blood pressure
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness
